Gary Yourofsky, the famed essayist and animal rights activist spoke at my school. My initial reaction was heart break: he opened his speech with "I've been to jail countless times and I'm banned from five countries." Jaws around me dropped as their first impression of veganism is this skinhead looking fellow with a bad mouth and total pride in his arrests. He belittled the meat eaters and then showed footage of the inside of factory farms. That was the turning point in his speech. He then explained his lifestyle and tried to get people to understand his way of living. Most began to warm up to him by that point. His passion for animal rights and knowledge of all things surrounding it made it extremely hard for anyone to counter his points. Afterwords, I shook his hand, gushed about good vegan food places in NY, and gave him my email address in hopes that he'd contact me the next time he spoke.

Then, on my own time, I researched more about his ideals, and found this:
"'And we must be willing to do whatever it takes to gain their freedom and stop their torture,' he adds. For himself, that means only nonviolent means. But Mr. Yourofsky doesn't condemn others who feel differently. 'Do not be afraid to condone arsons at places of animal torture,' he has written to supporters.'

Matter of fact, if an 'animal abuser' were to get killed in the process of burning down a research lab, 'I would unequivocally support that, too.'"

I cannot wrap my mind around that statement. Perhaps it is because I value a human life far more than an animal. But that by no means stops mean from abstaining from meat, dairy and eggs. This man, who I (on top of finding attractive... I know, vegan boys win my heart far too easily) found so enlightening is... practically a terrorist.

It's such a pity, because he is SUCH a dynamic person.

...to body modifications. I know, you can't see most of them and I'm not covered in bizarre piercings that stop me from getting jobs, but, following each tattoo and piercing, I find myself immediately pining for the next one. Perhaps I should start focusing on fixing myself, first.

So far, I have:
A back piece

A tongue web piercing

Inner lip tattoo

Hip tattoo, which is a mockery of the tattoo culture, but I got it when I was 15, so there.

And most recently:

My lip. You see the post-midterm bags under my eyes and the sleepy college student hair? That look is the product of massive amounts of studying. So far I have an A on my Anthropology midterm and an A+ on my Psych midterm. I'm currently munching on carrot sticks, 'cause I have a queasy tummy after screw drivers at the bar last night. I'm off to put the finishing touches on a song I wrote last night.

Later, dears.
